One hiatus later…

I’ve taken a break from the blog, as you can tell from the title alone, but I am back! woo, i guess.
Anyway, couple topics worth talking about in gaming and first up is this year’s Christmas line-up.
Looking at the lists for all console systems, there’s the usual EA bombardment of the annually updated sports game, key titles like new Mario and Meteroid, Mass Effect, all conquering Unreal Tournament, Haze and new Ratchet will be looking to dominate the exclusive format charts but, other than that, it’s a rather bland and, frankly, predictable. Seems that early 2008 has become the new christmas. Just looking at the line up then is enough to make even the merriest gamer think twice about spending now.
GTA 4, MGS 4, DMC 4 (the big “four-quel” games), Super Smash Bros Brawl, Gran Turismo 5 and The Club are just some of the excellent titles that will hit us soon. Big questions are being asked here.
Save up now or spend, spend spend? Anything you guys are looking forward to? Opinions and other comments welcome

FIFA 08- A demo overview and critic

“Message to the club secretary, Mr. Mooney has left the stadium.” Just one of the many annoucements over the stadium intercom you’ll hear including those shaming racism. Pointless but, unlike previous pointless additions to FIFA over the years, actually improves the atmosphere. Yes, the new FIFA is here, right on time although, not enough time to know Ole Gunnar Solskaer had retired.
Just to start off with, I’m a PES man, pure and simple. I enjoy getting to to grips with “real” football, football with crunching tackles, hard fought battles in midfield and goals coming out of nothing from 30 yards out. FIFA has to me, been the long lost millionaire cousin whom, although is graphic superior to PES and licensed to death, looses more “new” features than it retains.
So, how has FIFA turned my head this year, or rather what, is the Be a Pro Offline training (yes, they have given it that full name when they refer to it). Basically, it’s PES’s fixed cursor mode, you are one player on the pitch. However, unlike PES, the player camera that goes with it is ACTUALLY useful. it dynamically adjusts so that you are running in on goal, it’ll will zoom in and capture the moment but it also zooms out when defending, particularly on corners, so that you can see player making runs behind you. Useful. However, worth a note that, with the PS3 version, the framerate seemingly stutters a smidge. Not enough for a lag time but enough for you to think it doesn’t seem to be moving all that smoothly. Nevertheless, I thoughts are with the whole idea that it’s a downsized demo. Another thing worth of note is that when in does zoom in, it’s hard to tell where the bylines are so you’ll need to sue you’re head and also, it indicates where you’re players are but not such about distance away but, these are more warnings than anything.
Contents are pretty good for a FIFA demo this year. Still only a 45 minute game (aka, you’re forced in playing for 4 minutes) and only 1 stadium but they do have about 6 or 7 teams which does improve the options you have. Like NBA Live 08 (another game to impress and enthrall me), it contains a nice little single player ronaldinho vs. keeper training bit akin to the “be a pro” mode instead of a boring menu screen adored with pros, which does make things interesting. Another thing that impressive is that it has each teams full rosster of players. I’m talking subs and reserves! For 7 teams! on a demo! Brilliance.
Tele cam, still not brilliant for playing at as you are too far away from the action but this is a personal view and some may prefer this over the, much better, dynamic game, which adjusts to the action.
From what I gather from the demo, it seems that rather than saving replay videos and uploading them later, you can upload them from the spot, which is nice unless you had the idea in you’re head that EA were going to allow you to edit you’re own video so you can erase that embarassing miss two seconds earlier.
One complaint I do have is the fact that, if you are a skills player, things may get fiddly for you. if you want to matthews feign, stepover, flip-flap and rainbow flick (yes, rainbow flick) to victory, then you need to spend some serious time studying. the game won’t allow you space as the defenders are too good for that (i was playing at semi pro so, i’m imagining defenders at world class to be niegh on inpossible to beat) plus some tricks (again, rainbow flick) are hard to do and will require patience.
Ah, hard defence was mentioned there. When FIFA was full unveiled by “proud” Leeds fan and FIFA 08 produce, Joe Booth, he mentioned the threat maps that calculate player moves and all manner of technical stuff. Long story short, defenders are a damn sight smarter than attackers. took me 6 games to stick the ball away with Rooney on the 35 minute (beautiful pass from Carrick set… ENOUGH! lol) but I’ve rarely conceded since getting to grips with R2 being sprint. Even then, Carrick wwas moving back to defend as soon as Rooney received the ball. Attackers don’t seem to look for space sometimes and tend to bunch up with each other, particular if using someone like Scholes who drives forward from midfield.
Fast players aren’t never nearly fast enough to beat their markers. It’s much better to get a strong man like Rooney to fend of defenders and stick the ball in the back of the net than Ronaldo and Henry. Again, if you like quick players with tricky feet, you’ll be fiddling with the controls alot, swapping between L2, R2(new sprint button remember) and the right stick.
However, issues of framerate and advanced thinking aside, a very good game in prospect and, to quote Alan Hansel on recent England performances, “the passing was good, the control was good, the defending was good”. Wallets at the ready Gents.

Folklore- A demo overview and critic

a break down of what exactly you get with the folklore demo and what I think of it.
Folklore is about two people, Ellen and Keates who end up visiting the Netherworld which is actually composed of a series of worlds housing the dead. obviously.
You go through these worlds, which naturally deviate based on the state of mind that a person died in (forest for Faery realm and a warzone for Warcadia are the two taht you play in the demo with Ellen and Keates taking one of these realms respectively). You’re job is to travel through the realm of you’re choice, fight folk, nick their Id (soul-like part of them) and beat the Folklore (boss) at the end of the level.
So, back story done, how does it play? rather well actually. The way you use Folk to fight but not fight yourself is interesting to say the least. A lot of tactical thinking is involved to know which Folk to use with which situtation and having the story book to tell you how to take on the Folklore in pictorial form rather than being told in cutscenes is a rather nice touch.
SIXAXIS wise, it isn’t bad, got a good natural feel to it. you just use the SIXAXIS controls to get Ids but it’s probably the only thing you could use it for, bar camera controls such as in Heavenly Sword. The levels don’t feel that much different to each other. you just feel as though you are only using different folk but following the same pattern although, I blame that on it being a demo rather than game design.
All in all, not bad at all. for those of you that missed it, too bad I guess. Missed a good demo.

Blog-date: 6/9/07

Big update in the gaming world today.
Manhunt 2 is cleared for an october release(cut version) in the US and cleared for a sort of release in Europe(uncut. Well, Holland actually but more will come round.
More people caught out editing Wikipedia including SCEE editing the Halo 3 page with claims that “it won’t look any better than Halo 2″.
The PSN continues to suffer with 3rd party demo releases with the demos for SKATE and Stranglehold held back in comparison to their Xbox Live releases.
Lair developers FINALLY come out and declare that the controls with the dragon CAN be dodgy (a games developer big enough to admit a mistake is all fine in my book).
Wii continues to out perform all next gen consoles and is only beaten by DS in console sales (no probelm for nintendo there I think) out-selling PS3 1-3 in Japan.
3 Weeks to Halo 3, as though you needed reminding and Blue Dragon, an RPG created by a gathering of RPG creating legends including Nobuo Uematsu of FF music fame and Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball and Dragon Quest fame), is released all over Europe and US.
Multi-format game Borderlands is looking goo and suspectible at the same time with it’s claim of contain 500,000 weapons.
Sneaky Xbox Live players caught out and given 24 hour ban after being able to get a hold of COD4 beta test without going through the proper pre-order channels.
Bioshock is released after suffering so many traumas just to get it made and is, as the developer expected, a total classic. Well, critically it’s a classic, people just need to buy copies now.

Alright, thats all for now, more news and junk soon.

EA caught messes around with Wiki

ooh, haven’t game giants EA been naughty? Seems they have been caught out for altering their own article on wikipedia. Aparrently, a staff member of EA has been mucking about on Wikipedia, altering their own profile on it, “cleaning up” all the criticism about the company but also, removing references about the company’s founder, Trip Hawkins.
Criticism removla I could understand (not condone mind) but Trip Hawkins? Hmmm, interesting. Anyway, the information has apparently been returned to the page by the Wikipedia community. I’ll keep you up-to-date if and when this situtation develops

From the Archives of Wikipedia

Just a nice little look at the collection of games that have considered to be controversial, courteasy of that enigma that is wikipedia. I tell you what, some of the games that are on there and even some of the reasons for inclusion have left me dumbstruck.

Have you’re say here

For those of you regular visitors to my blog will know, this is a damn good blog for the big news and opinions (my own mostly) in gaming. however, I want to know what you guys think of it. What do you want to see more of and what you want to see less of? Do you want me to start reviewing new games? Do you want to here more about games or more about game development tools and technology? Just make some suggestions of how to improve the blog and I’ll get onto what I can.

More controversy but on a bright note….

Resident Evil 5 has now been accused for being controversal and, for those of you who have seen the trailer, will know about the reason why. Yes, it seems accusation of racism are alive and well as Resi has been accused by an African women’s blog and, to quote the blog “… the depiction of Black people as inhuman savages, the killing of Black people by a white man in military clothing, and the fact that this video game is marketed to children and young adults. Start them young… fearing, hating, and destroying Black people.” Hm…
Elsewhere, Rockstar are going to appeal against the ban placed on it by the BBFC by heading off the Video Appeals Committee. Hopefully, they should be able to overturn it and get it out for about november/january time as they won’t want it clashing with gta4. oh, it will be a controversal winter…

What the #*@! you mean 11 v 11 FIFA matches?!

EA recently gave the world a preview of yet another FIFA. What makes this one more special is the “be a Pro” mode. Some of you who have played the Club Football games or used fixed cursor from PES will know that this basically entails you playing as one player on the pitch.
No big deal really but I guess it’s a nice little addition. What intrigued, and annoyed me, most was the Co-op mode in it. Currently, it houses up to 4 players playing as 1 player a piece. that’s all fine and dandy as these players could take on the most attacking roles and become match winners but EA seemed to have gotten the weird idea into their head that 11 v 11 would be possible.
Well, of course it’s technologically possible to have 11 playing men against eleven playing men but seriously, is they’re anyone out there who wants to be a defender or even a goalkeeper for that matter? We all know that the basis of the modern game is attacking football, hence why teams like Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have blown their over inflated transfer budgets on mostly attacking players and this is well reflected in the skill level of attacking players as opposed to defensive players. So unless EA can make defending and goalkeeping in the game more fun and appealing, 11 v 11 player controlled matches aren’t going to happen. I give it 2 years before EA tries, and fails, at doing it.

‘Tis a fine barn but be no pool english… or rather be no Sony

You all know by know that I like to big up Sony and the PS3 in this blog but today, I’m going to be fairly unbiased…. fairly being a key word here. Wii and 360 are great systems but, I have to ask you guys, where’s all the exclusive good news?
In the past week, All I’ve heard from the Microsoft camp is that 360 is a potential future hard drive price cut and PS3 exclusive content for Splinter Cell becoming available on marketplace coupled with Convinction get knocked back to March to take on MGS4 (which, i think is good news for Microsoft as it should be able to plug the console heavily off the back of a new SC). Oh, and a planned sequel to the brilliant Dead Rising.
Nintendo have got some news about a surprise on the Mii Channel come september, stuff about sales figures and some stuff about a pokemon game or two.
Compare that with Sony’s on-demand video and free view plan, partnered with a Rockstar franchise exclusive as well as MGS4 stuff and you’ve hit a powerful week for Sony PR.
I mean, are you all saving it up. Wouldn’t be surprised, Sony need to reel out all the big news it can to boost sales, hoping they can break even on the console by march 08. they also need to start putting out some really good downloadable content on the PSN as it is seriously lagging behind the frankly much superior content on Marketplace and Virtual Console (even if claims from Sony that it is all old content are founded, it’s still good content).
Oh, and any excited by the new Resi 5 full trailer? Damn, those zombies/humans/midless hordes can move fast. Word on it is that the 360 may not be seen in Japan due to poor sales. I do put sever doubt over this but I’ll update you when I get word.

ps, if you only you guys hear of some nice xbox/wii info, be more than glad to hear it :)
